Registration Changes

Postby GeckoAdmin on Fri Nov 27, 2009 8:16 am

We are receiving an abnormally high number of spam registrations these days, so to reduce this I am requiring all new registrations to be confirmed by an admin. Every day I am having to delete over 70 spam posts so something has to be done to stop this.

I am based in the UK and Icy is based in the US, so its daytime for one of us most of the time. Therefore you shouldn't have to wait long till your account is activated!

I know this is a pain but something has to be done. Hopefully this is only temporary, as soon as the spammers are reduced these requirements will be lifted. In my experience once the spambots realise the site can't be spammed they move on.

In the meantime I am investigating upgrades to the CAPTCHA system, which makes it harder for non humans to sign up in the first place.

Apologies again for any inconvenience!

I'd also like to add that to further reduce spam accounts, I am noting the IP of all accounts that are deleted as spam. If one in particular keeps arising it will be assumed to be static and banned. The problem is that most ISP's these days assign a new IP whenever you log on which makes it very difficult to track spammers. By waiting till an IP comes up repeatedly I have more chance of solving the problem.

Hopefully this should mean a better user experience for everyone!(And a lightening of my workload ;) )
